If a loved one has passed away at home, there are a number of things you will need to do depending on whether the death was expected or unexpected during the night or day.
If the death was due to a terminal illness, this would be classed as expected. In the first instance, notify their GP or community nurse in order for the death to be certified.
If the death was unexpected its best to call the Police and Ambulance services by dialling 999. The operator will provide instructions on what you need to do
If the cause of death is unknown, leave the area untouched other than trying to resuscitate. The Police will arrange for the chosen funeral director to collect the deceased and take them to the Coroner
Please note: A funeral cannot be conducted until the Coroner’s inquest has been completed and cause of death established.
